7:30 pm on Thursday, March 23 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts
The Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association and Shawnee State University are pleased to present the O’Connor Band with Mark O’Connor performing at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 23 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
The O’Connor Band with Mark O’Connor were the winners of the 2017 Grammy in Bluegrass. Joining fiddlers, Mark and Maggie O’Connor, will be Forrest O’Connor on the mandolin and vocals, Kate Lee on fiddle and vocals, Joe Smart, National Flatpick Guitar Champion, and double bassist/old-time banjoist, Geoff Saunders. The band will be performing favorites of bluegrass, country and Americana, including some of O’Connor’s own famous pieces.
Mark O’Connor holds the record of youngest person ever to win the Grand Master Fiddler Championships at the age of 13 while competing against all ages, amateur and professional. O’Connor is still the only one to win national titles (open to all ages) on fiddle, bluegrass guitar and mandolin. Among his highlights, O’Connor has multiple Grammy-winning recordings, including “Appalachia Waltz” with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer, which spent a year atop the Billboard classical music charts. With over 250 performances, O’Connor’s “Fiddle Concerto” has become the most performed modern violin concerto composed in the last 50 years.
“We have been blessed with something of an upgraded performance,” said Joe Patti, Director of VRCFA. “Originally, Mark and Maggie were scheduled to perform their American Classics program, but when the O’Connor Band won the Grammy, they called and asked if they could bring the whole group. There was no way we were going to say no.”
Tickets for the O’Connor Band performance are $25 for the general public, $24 for seniors, $17 for SSU students, $15 for children ages 12 and under. Upper tier tickets are available at a discounted price. Special discounts are available for families and groups.
Additional information and tickets are available at the McKinley Box Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., by calling (740) 351-3600, or online at vrcfa.com.
The performance of the O’Connor Band is sponsored by the Scioto Foundation.
The 2016-17 SOPAA/SSU season is presented with the support of the Ohio Arts Council, an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, The SSU Development Foundation, City of Portsmouth, OH, the Martings Foundation and the Scioto Foundation.
