Information

Shawnee State University welcomes Dr. Youngjoo Yi to present “Language Learning, Technology, and Identity Construction” as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series at 3 p.m. on Weds., March 15 in Room 215 in the Morris University Center.

Dr. Yi’s presentation is based on her own research on the current literature on language learning, technology and identity in the fields of applied linguistics and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Her lecture presents ways that show how language learning is interconnected with the use of emerging technologies and identity construction of language learners. Dr. Yi observes how multilingual students participate in digital and multimodal literacy practices in their daily lives and tend to negotiate their multiple identities (For example, English language learner identity, ethnic or cultural identity, gamer identity) which are likely to influence their language learning.

Dr. Yi is an Associate Professor in Foreign and Second Language Education in the College of Education at the Ohio State University. She received her Bachelor’s in teaching history and language education from Kyungpook National University, South Korea. Dr. Yi then pursued her masters from Arizona State University in TESOL and her Ph.D. in Foreign and Second Language Education from OSU. Her major research interests include English language learners’ literacy learning that focuses on adolescent students.

Dr. Yi’s presentation is open and free to SSU students, faculty, staff and the Portsmouth community.

The Jane M.G. Foster Distinguished Lecture Series is sponsored by the SSU Development Foundation.
