Dr. Lavanya Vemsani has published a book, Krishna in History, Thought, and Culture.
Dr. Lavanya Vemsani, Professor of History and Religious Studies at Shawnee State University, has published a book, Krishna in History, Thought, and Culture, through Abc-Clio Publications this past June.
Krishna in History, Thought, and Culture focuses on the importance of Krishna, a central figure in Hinduism, to world history. It offers topical and thematic entries illuminating texts, practice and modern developments inside and outside of India. The book covers philosophical traditions, such as Advaita and vegetarianism. It looks at spiritual and yoga traditions as well as their contemporary adaptations, and includes extensive studies of followers and founders of Krishna in India and around the world. The book also shares geographical information regarding sacred places and places of pilgrimage.
Dr. Vemsani has worked for the last three years to complete the book. She took a sabbatical in 2013 to complete her research, choose which topics to include and finish writing the book.
“Krishna is an extensive subject and it was difficult to choose which topics to include in the end, but it is an important book for anyone interested in learning about Hinduism and especially Krishna. I have assembled the most basic information in one place,” said Dr. Vemsani.
Dr. Vemsani has taught at SSU for 10 years and has taught both history and religious courses, such as World History, History of India, Gandhi and Modern Indian and Hinduism. She is currently working on another book focusing on India in world history and editing a collection of essays on Indian religions. Dr. Vemsani holds two doctorates in Religious Studies from McMaster University located in Hamilton, Canada, and in History from the University of Hyderabad in Hyderabad, India. She is also the author of Hindu and Jain Mythology of Balarama and has published a number of articles on early history and religions of India.
Krishna in History, Thought, and Culture is available at Barnes & Noble Bookstores in both hardcover and Nook formats. The book is also available online at Amazon.com in the Kindle and hardcover format.
