Dr. Daehler’s donation ensures funding towards the men’s tennis team for the 2016 season.
The Shawnee State University Development Foundation announced acceptance of a gift
from Dr. William E. Daehler to assist with SSU’s Athletics Expansion Plan.
Dr. Daehler’s donation ensures funding towards the men’s tennis team for the upcoming 2016 season. His contribution is making possible the inaugural season and the first men’s tennis team at SSU.
“A men’s tennis team would create more interest for the community in a sport which has slipped some in popularity. A good SSU tennis team would attract more folks to tennis,” said Dr. Daehler.
SSU announced back in April of its plan to expand the Athletics Department, which includes the addition of four new varsity sports: men’s tennis, women’s golf and men’s and women’s indoor track teams.
Dr. Daehler has a history with SSU’s Athletics Department, specifically the tennis program. In 2008, Dr. Daehler and his wife lead the effort to construct a new state-of-the-art outdoor tennis facility with six courts. The Dr. William E. Daehler Tennis Center was opened that same year, and is now home to the SSU’s women’s tennis team, the new men’s tennis team, and serves host to several regional high school and other community tennis events each year.
“Dr. Daehler’s generosity was critical to getting men’s tennis off the ground at SSU. There’s rich tradition of tennis in Southern Ohio and the university is excited to see that, with Dr. Daehler’s support, this tradition will be part of the area’s future,” said Eric Braun, Vice President for Advancement and External Affairs at SSU.
