Monihen and Stewart presented “Texting Partnerships for Academic Advising & Retention.”
Shawnee State University’s Lindsay Monihen, Academic Advisor & Student Support Coordinator, and Janet Stewart, Systems and Digital Initiatives Librarian, presented at the 2016 Ohio Association of Academic Advising Conference (OHAAA) on June 17 at Lourdes University in Sylvania, OH.
Monihen and Stewart presented “Texting Partnerships for Academic Advising & Retention.” The presentation highlights a successful partnership between the library and academic advisors to develop a texting service for SSU’s advisors.
“Lindsay had approached me last summer about wanting to use the library’s texting service, LibraryH3lp, to communicate with the students she advises because it would be a platform they frequently used, and I thought that would be a great idea, so we launched a trial last fall to help remind students of important dates, to schedule appointments, as well as to follow up with those appointments,” said Stewart.
The texting platform of LibraryH3lp is a low-cost, web-based texting/chatting service made possible through the collaboration with Clark Memorial Library. Outgoing messages can be sent through Google Voice and the incoming messages are received through LibraryH3lp. It is an excellent one-on-one tool to ask questions, follow-up, outreach and support.
“Since Sept. 1, I have had over 600 chat conversations with students. The initiative is to increase student support in advising and used as a retention tool. We have expanded its use on campus to admission, career development and advisors,” said Monihen.
