June 9-12, 2016
The 7th Annual Gene Bennett Baseball Classic will be Thurs., June 9 to Sun., June 12.
Shawnee State University will be sponsoring the 7th Annual Gene Bennett Baseball Classic (GBBC) starting Thurs., June 9 to Sun., June 12.
The event honors Gene Bennett, a Scioto County native who graduated from Wheelersburg High School, and his overall contributions to sport of baseball. Bennett played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1952-57 then became a scout for the Reds in 1958. During his scouting career, he recruited notable players, including Barry Larkin and Don Gullet. In addition to honoring Bennett’s accomplishments, the classic serves as a way to elevate and inspire youth, promote community development and bring baseball back to the Tri-State area.
During the classic, 18 elite traveling teams from the State of Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, and West Virginia will be playing against each other. The GBBC will consist of games played throughout the day on Thursday and Friday, while games played on Saturday and Sunday will be played according to tournament format. Each time will be seeded according to their record for single elimination games. The GBBC is a wood bat tournament with seven inning games and a 10 run rule will apply to all games.
Games will be played at several different sites around the region, including Branch Rickey Park, Portsmouth High School, Lewis County High School, Valley High School and Minford High School.
Admission is free to all during the four-day classic.
