SSU Athletics expansion includes addition of four new varsity intercollegiate teams.
The Shawnee State University Athletics Department is pleased to announce the addition of four new varsity sports for the 2016-17 season.
SSU President Rick Kurtz first announced the expansion of SSU Athletics at the SSU Hall of Fame Banquet on Feb. 5.
The four new varsity sports are the men and women’s indoor track and field teams, men’s tennis team and the women’s golf team.
The four new teams will start Fall 2016 and will join SSU’s 13 current varsity teams (Men and women’s basketball, cross country, track, and soccer, men’s baseball and golf, and women’s softball, tennis and volleyball). SSU competes in the Mid-South Conference and is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Plans for the addition of more programs will follow in the future.
“Athletics is a vital part of campus life that impacts students’ satisfaction,” said Kurtz. “Expanding our teams will provide more opportunities to attract and retain our students, as well as provide more scholarships and a chance to continue to compete in their chosen sport beyond high school.”
SSU is located at 940 Second Street, Portsmouth, Ohio, along the banks of the Ohio River. With more than 80 Bachelor’s and Associates degree programs and three Master’s degree programs, SSU is a student-focused university offering highly personalized, affordable and accessible education.
