Sam Quinones will speak at 7 pm on Apr. 21 in the main theater of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
Acclaimed journalist and author, Sam Quinones, presents “Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic,” at 7 p.m. on Apr. 21 in the main theater of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
Quinones’s presentation weaves together two riveting tales of capitalism run amok whose unintentional collision has been a catastrophic opiate epidemic. His story is based on Dreamland, a recreational swimming pool the size of a football field that was built in 1929 in Portsmouth, Ohio, and ties it with the story of how addiction has impacted the once vital community center and its residents.
Quinones has won several awards for his work, including Amazon.com’s Best Books of the Year 2015, Weekly’s 10 Best Books of 2015, Buzzfeed’s 19 Best Nonfiction Books of 2015, as well as Boston Globe’s Best Books of 2015.
The Shawnee State University bookstore will have copies of Dreamland for sale at the event. Sam will be available before and after the event to sign books.
Quinones’s presentation is sponsored through the Shawnee State University Development Foundation, the CML, and the Alcohol, Drug, Addiction and Mental Health Services Board (ADAMHS) of Adams, Lawrence and Scioto Counties.
