SSU and Portsmouth City Schools have an agreement for the shared use of their athletics facilities.
Shawnee State University and Portsmouth City Schools have entered into a memorandum of agreement for the shared use of their athletics facilities.
This collaboration will aid in the expansion of SSU’s Athletics, which includes the addition of four new teams and 36 new student-athletes in the first year.
SSU has agreed to share the use of the Rhodes Athletic Center Gymnasium, Warsaw Natatorium, the Dr. William E. Daehler Tennis Center and the Shawnee Turf. In return, PCS will share the use of the Portsmouth High School Gymnasiums, the Hadsell Track & Field Facility and the Hatcher Field.
“I look at the recent agreement as a natural progression of PCS’s relationship with SSU. Our athletes will continue to benefit through the use of the SSU pool, gym, and tennis courts,” said Scott Dutey, Superintendent of PCS District. “We look forward to all the positive impacts of continuing our partnership with Dr. Kurtz and Jeff Hamilton in the future.”
By allowing SSU runners to utilize the Hadsell Track and Field Facility, SSU is able to expand the Track and Field programs and add field events and sprinters to the roster. In turn, SSU runners and coaches will be able to help train PHS runners at practices.
The President’s office and Jeff Hamilton, Director of SSU’s Athletic Department, worked out the details of the MOU with Dutey and Joe Albrecht, PHS Athletic Director, to make this collaboration a reality.
“This collaboration will be very beneficial for both entities, but ultimately, student-athletes at both schools will benefit the most out of this,” said Hamilton. “This partnership will create a lot of positive experiences and opportunities for both schools and we look forward to seeing what the future brings.”
