The SSU Women’s Center is up and running under the direction of new director Jessica Pacula.
The Shawnee State University’s Women’s Center is up and running under the direction of new director Jessica Pacula.
Pacula earned her undergraduate degree in Middle Childhood Education from Malone University and completed her Master’s degree from the University of Akron. She has previously taught at SSU and worked as a tutor in the Success Center.
“I’m honored and excited to be further involved with SSU and the Women’s Center,” said Pacula. “I’ve been so impressed with all of the powerful events the center has hosted in the past and I can’t wait to bring new ideas to the table. My main goal is to keep this save haven for students open and running.”
The mission of SSU’s Women’s Center is to promote, advocate, educate and support the women of SSU and the community. It is a safe space created to support the female students with whatever they may need, be it a gender-related issue or not. Past services that have been offered are academic support, professional guidance, relationship support, self-imaging and identity support.
The Women’s Center will be hosting an event focusing on raising awareness about eating disorders during the week of Feb. 22 through 26. The event will be hosted in conjunction with the Department of Counseling and Health Services and the Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority.
Pacula plans on hosting read-ins, brown bag lunches and inviting key speakers from the community or SSU to share in topics important to women, as well as adding a clothing drive, to the center’s activities for 2016. The Women’s Center also plans to work in collaboration with the student-led group, Women’s Initiative for Strength and Excellence (W.I.S.E).
The Women’s Center is located at Room 019 in the basement of Massie Hall and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mon. through Thurs., and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays.
