The McGinnis Portsmouth West Scholarship supports Portsmouth West graduates pursuing a degree in mathematics.
The Shawnee State University Development Foundation received a gift from Brent and Karen McGinnis, of Portsmouth, Ohio, to establish The McGinnis Portsmouth West Scholarship. The McGinnis Portsmouth West Scholarship supports Portsmouth West High School graduates pursuing a degree in mathematics at SSU.
Applicants must be a graduate of Portsmouth West High School, a full-time freshman enrolled as a Mathematics major in pursuit of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, require financial aid and be in good academic standing. Previous award winners can be awarded the scholarship in subsequent years and in the event there are no freshmen enrolled in mathematics from Portsmouth West High School, the award can go to a freshman enrolled as a Natural Science major.
“Karen and I feel that an education in math or the sciences prepares one for real success and wanted to make a contribution to help someone pursue their degree,” said Brent McGinnis.
Applications will be made on the traditional SSU scholarship form and the Office of Financial Aid will select the recipient.
A minimum award of $1,000 shall be made per year, payable in increments of $500.00 per semester. Additional funds may be awarded from the endowment’s available spending at the discretion of the committee.
“Thanks to the private support from generous donors such as Brent and Karen McGinnis, students at SSU will have the aid they need in pursuing an excellent education,” said Matt Ward, Associate Director of the SSU Development Foundation.
