Terry Barber is to perform at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 1 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
The Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association (SOPAA) in partnership with Shawnee State University welcomes counter-tenor Terry Barber to perform at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 1 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts (VRCFA).
Barber is a counter-tenor which means he has the rare ability to sing higher than a regular tenor, possessing an amazing four octave range where as most men only possess a range of two or three octaves. There may be about 50 counter-tenors working in the world.
Counter-tenors began during a period of time when men and women were not allowed to share the stage, therefore, the men had to sing the high female parts as well. Castration was often used to maintain the high pitch necessary to sing those parts. Barber, however, is a natural counter-tenor and has retained his ability throughout his life.
The “Christmas Presence” program Barber will be performing will include seasonal music from classical, sacred, traditional and contemporary styles. He will sing works written for baritone, tenor and sopranos to show off the flexibility of his vocal cords.
Barber is an opera singer of world class credentials and has been a soloist for the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and Moscow’s Svetlanov Hall. He is also a past member of the Grammy Award winning group Chanticleer.
A video of Barber’s past performances are available on the SOPAA website, www.sopaa.org, for the public to get a scope of Barber’s singing ability.
