The Women’s Initiative for Strength and Excellence (WISE) held its first meeting March 24.
A new organization has officially formed on the campus of Shawnee State University as the Women’s Initiative for Strength and Excellence (WISE) held its initial meeting on Tuesday, March 24 at 3:30 p.m. in Massie Hall Rm. 436.
WISE Director Brandy Wilkerson says that the program is designed to enrich the knowledge of what women go through on a daily basis. Even though the program itself is still is in its beginning stages, Wilkerson says that the members of the group are already churning out ideas that could be used as the organization begins to grow, including an activity that has men walking in heels.
“Right now, we’re focusing on one activity in particular and that activity is having men walking in heels, so they can see how women feel,” Wilkerson said. “With finals coming up soon, we’re not going to try to fit in a cluster of events at once, but next year is when we’re really going to hit the ground running with more activities and events.”
In just over two weeks, Wilkerson has already seen gains in the amount of interest being shown for WISE, as 25 individuals have already joined the organization in its efforts to increase knowledge about women in general. Additionally, the organization has had great co-ed participation so far as eight of WISE’s 25 members are males.
Wilkerson says that in addition to hosting events on campus, the members of WISE hope that they will be able to branch out to the local high schools in the Portsmouth area and inform them about the organization.
