Shawnee State women’s basketball fans and supporters are invited to a special send-off event hosted by the Schmidt Family Restaurant Group this Sunday, March 15 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings as the team heads to compete in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship, presented by Susan G. Komen Greater Kansas City. The tournament is being held in Independence, Missouri.

During the event, the public is invited to meet the team, celebrate their accomplishments, and send them off to the tournament knowing that they are supported at home.

“The community support for our programs, and especially our student athletes, is overwhelming,” SSU Athletics Director Jeff Hamilton, said. “It means a lot to our students and coaches that so many people are behind them.”

The SSU Bears are entering the national tournament after winning the Mid-South Conference Tournament for the first time since joining the conference prior to the 2010-11 season. The Bears will face The Master’s (Calif.) in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday, March 18 at 1 p.m. The game will be aired on campus in Jazzman’s Café in the University Center, as well as at Buffalo Wild Wings. The community is invited to attend the viewings, in addition to the send-off event this weekend.

Shawnee State has now made the Division I NAIA National Tournament in five-straight seasons, making it to the final four in their first year competing in the division.

SSU is the No. 5 seed and the lone automatic qualifier from the Mid-South, having won the conference tournament. The MSC placed five teams in the 32-team field, as Campbellsville University, the University of Pikeville, Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland University are each in the field, as well. SSU and Pikeville are in the same eight-team squadron.
