As part of the nationwide celebration of one of the greatest leaders of the Civil
Rights Movement, Shawnee State University will have its annual Martin Luther King
Day of Service on Monday, January 19 from Noon to 4 p.m. in the University Center’s
Formed in 1994 to commemorate the legacy of Dr. King, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service was created as a call for Americans to service the communities in which they reside by working alongside one another to solve the problems that citizens face on an everyday basis.
Born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. King rose up through the educational ranks, as King was accepted into Morehouse College by the age of 15 and graduated with a B.A. in sociology from Morehouse in 1948. King then moved on to obtain a B.D. at Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland, Pennsylvania in 1951 and a Ph.D. in systematic theology at Boston University in 1955.
During the final 13 years of his life until his assassination, Dr. King quickly ascended into the defacto leader of the Civil Rights Movement, as he played a leading role in movements that would shape the country’s history forever, such as the Montgomery (Ala.) Bus Boycott, which lasted for 385 days and eventually ended racial segregation on public buses in the city.
In 1963, King was one of the main leaders of the March on Washington, where over 250,000 people of mixed ethnicities came together to protest the living and working conditions of minorities. There, King made arguably one of the greatest speeches of all time, as his “I Have a Dream” speech became a central figure in the Civil Rights Movement. As a result, Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize (1964), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977), and the Congressional Gold Medal (2004) for his efforts.
