Friend of Children awards presented to local child care providers

Lilian Katz, Ph.D., professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign was guest speaker.

In 2008, the first annual Friend of Children Awards were presented during the Fabulous Friday luncheon for child care providers and early childhood educators at Shawnee State University's Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. SSU Provost David Todt, Ph.D., was one of the first recipients that year.

This year, Lilian Katz, Ph.D., professor Emerita of Early Childhood Education at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign was the guest speaker. She was also presented with an honorary Friend of Children Award.

Katz is also principal investigator for the Illinois Early Learning Project, a contributor to the Early Childhood and Parenting Collaborative, and editor of the first online peer-reviewed early-childhood journal, "Early Childhood Research & Practice."

Three awards were given out this year including two organizations, one practitioner and one advocate. Two organizations were tied, so both were presented with the Friend of Children Award. United Way of Scioto County was presented to Executive Director Mary Ann Miars-Peercy. The other organization was !MPACT presented to team coordinator Keith "K.C." Chatfield, who works with adults with disabilities from STAR.

Charlotte Moore received the award as a childcare practitioner. She has been a long time educator in Scioto County, and now works at SSU.

Stephanie Childers received the Friend of Children Award as a childcare advocate. She is a consultant with the Ohio Department of Education, State Support Team Region 15 which includes Scioto, Ross, Pike and Lawrence counties.

Fabulous Friday was sponsored by Shawnee State University's Department of Teacher Education, Dr. Miller & Genevieve Toombs Children's Learning Center (CLC), Office of Educational Partnerships and State Support Team Region 15.
