A new scholarship endowment has been established at Shawnee State University to honor the late Richard "Dick" Howard.

Dick Howard, a graduate of The Ohio State University, was a lifelong patron of education. While he was at OSU, he worked as an athletic trainer for Woody Hayes. He taught and coached at Valley High School from 1962 to 1965 and in the Wheelersburg school system from 1965-1967. Additionally, he counseled in the Minford School system and SCJVS from 1967 to 1970.

He served in various capacities in the 1980s from the infancy of what is now Shawnee State University, including Vice President of Student Services, from which he retired in 2006. He served on Children's Services, Educational Services and Scioto County Career Technical Center Boards. He passed away in October 2013.

The Howard Athletic Trainers Scholarship is designed to assist student athletic trainers at SSU.
