The Third Annual Burns Supper was held on Thursday, Jan. 25 at the Port City Café and Pub. The event raised $1,500 to support the Shawnee State University Development Foundation Creative Writing Fund.

“The annual Burns Supper, sponsored and hosted by Port City Café and Pub, has become the primary means of financial support for the Shawnee State University Creative Writing Fund,” said Neil Carpathios, author and assistant professor of English and Humanities.

The annual event celebrates the life, work and times of Scotland’s famous poet, Robert Burns. He is referred to as the national poet of Scotland and his birthday on January 25 is celebrated worldwide. The Burn’s Supper has been a Scottish tradition for more than 200 years.

These suppers are traditionally held to support the creative and fine arts in areas where the suppers are held.

The proceeds of the event help in funding the annual student writing competition. It also brings visiting authors to campus, and helps with other related writing activities at SSU.

Phyllis Noah, communications coordinator and adjunct instructor at SSU, started the fund. She has been a professional writer for the past 28 years.

“When I saw the talented student writers at the annual competition four years ago, I just had to do something to encourage them to continue and to honor them,” Noah said. “There were practically no funds for the writers or for the event.”

Port City has been a supporter of the writers with Poets Night monthly when poets can recite their works.

“In this day and age of economic struggle, this generous donation is a godsend for the development of young creative writers at Shawnee State,” Carpathios said.
