MOT Interns

Barbara Warnock, MS, OTR/L, field coordinator of Shawnee State University's Occupational Therapy and Master of Occupational Therapy programs, has a passion for helping children. She is the lead OT at Compass Community Health Care Center's Pediatric OT Sensory Gym.

A new program at Compass is helping SSU's occupational therapy students intern in the Pediatric Gym.

"It is the first pediatric OT clinic in Scioto County," Warnock said. "We have a recent MOT graduate who has just been hired full time at the clinic."

Warnock's specialties are in Sensory Integration, Therapeutic Listening and Praxis Testing.

The features of the Sensory Gym are suspended equipment and swings for balance and vestibular stimulation; crash mats and pillows for fun, motor planning and core strengthening; find and gross motor activities; therapeutic listening; and includes iPad apps and Xbox Kinect games to strengthen motor and concentration skills.

The approaches at Compass Pediatric Sensory Gym are often helpful for treating children with learning difficulties, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Developmental Dyspraxia, sensory deficits and general developmental challenges.

Infants, toddlers, and pre-school children are being treated at the clinic, although children up to 12 years old can be treated.

"We have two new MOT students who are working on a grant for a new summer program," Warnock said.

Second Presbyterian Church, the Scioto Foundation, and The United Way have provided funds for the OT program.
