Around Campus

by Sandi Delabar

Semester Conversion is fast approaching!

On June 25th the entire Shawnee State University campus will be embarking on a new beginning.  That is the date we begin our very first semester term.  All across campus everyone has been gearing up for the conversion from the quarter term to semester term. Departmental and staff meetings have been held and we are discovering there is always a little something we all forgot about until we started actively working on the academic schedules with our students.

Semester advising for students has been in progress for the entire spring quarter and while some students have started preparing some are waiting until the fall semester to come in for their individual advising plan (IAP).  The offices of Financial Aid and Registrar have been particularly busy with student questions and concerns.

Our enrollment figures are very close to where they were last year at this time and everyone seems to feel that we are well prepared for the change.

We are all looking forward to the new changes as a step forward for Shawnee State University.  I am sure that this first semester will be a hectic one as we all learn to change our own work schedules to coincide with the new academic year.

Health Updates and Condolences

Sympathy to Chris Hartstein for her sister, Sandra Crawford.  Memorial services were Wednesday, May 23, at 4 p.m.

Get well wishes go to Carlos Royster  who has been out on medical leave and Bill Dickerson who has broken his foot.

Southern Ohio Women's Cancer Project

A program developed to assist eligible women by providing FREE mammograms and Pap Tests to help promote early detection and treatment of breast and cervical cancers.  This program is available to women in Adams, Brown, Gallia, Highland, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto and Vinton Counties.

Eligible women must meet the following criteria:

Must be at least 40 years old

Income must be below 200% of the federal poverty level

Must have no Medicare or Medicaid

Must have no health insurance

Eligible women between 40 and 50 years old qualify for FREE pap tests including pelvic exam and clinical breast exam.

Eligible women over 50 also qualify for a FREE mammogram.

For more information contact: Mary Collins, project coordinator and case manager for Scioto County at 1-800-944-2232.

Most SSU employees will not qualify for this program, but we all know women without insurance or who are underinsured.  Pass the word.  Cancer is bad enough without the additional burden of unaffordable tests.

Question:

In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?

The first to email the USA Newsletter committee at  USANews@shawnee.edu will receive a prize—a genuine, classy, pedestal, Jazzman Café coffee mug, complete with a Jazzman Café $5 gift certificate.  The winner will receive the prize at our next USA open meeting on June 12!  Good Luck!
