Notes from USA Chair                            Spring 2009

Change seems to be the most appropriate word for what is happening in education, in Ohio, and in the nation.  The budget crunch is a major concern for all Shawnee State University employees. Dr. Todt has asked constituents for budget reduction suggestions. The University Staff Assembly has risen to the challenge by replying with some thoughtful and creative ideas for reducing budgets without furloughing employees.

While spring draws near (we hope), the University System of Ohio celebrates its first year anniversary. As the state's public system of higher education, the University System of Ohio bears the primary responsibility for raising educational attainment. To do so, the system must meet the following goals:

  • Graduating more students

  • Keeping graduates in Ohio

  • Attracting more talent to Ohio

Meeting these goals will enable Ohio to meet the benchmarks for higher education established by Governor Strickland, including increasing enrollment by 230,000 by 2017, and increasing the rate of graduation by 20 percent. For more information on the University System of Ohio, check out the website at http://uso.edu/strategicplan/index.php.

USA continues to invite other University employees to our monthly meetings for informative purposes. Bill Turner, EMT/Paramedic Program Director, will demonstrate the AED (Automatic Electronic Defibrillator) at our March meeting. If you have any suggestions for future presenters, please contact your USA chair, Penny Merritt, x3225.

David Cook, American Idol winner,  gave an outstanding (and I do mean STANDING) performance at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts this past weekend and the Lady Bears just made university history by completing a perfect season! Way to shine, SSU!  Let’s all continue the good work!

GO RED FOR WOMEN

$1,049.00

WOW what a success!  This is the fifth consecutive year for the "Go Red " campaign at SSU!  The Women's Center partnered with the American Heart Association to raise awareness of heart disease throughout the month of February.  Their goal was to collect a thousand dollars.  A big THANK YOU goes out to volunteers who donated their time and collected for this event and to everyone who donated!!!

Tracie Shaw has completed all of her coursework and comprehensive exam for her Ph.D.  She is a ABD at the moment and will begin her dissertation in April.  She is teaching for the College of Business.  Look for more news from Tracie soon.

Sarah Smith Richards is very proud these days of her two sisters.  Kelly Langston from North Carolina has published her first book.  The title is Autism's Hidden Blessings.  Look for Kelly at the Portsmouth Public Library on May 2nd from 3:00-5:00 p.m. for a book signing.  Sarah's other sister Rachel Taylor is due to have a baby boy in May.  She has multiple sclerosis, like Sarah's mother did, so Sarah would appreciate our prayers for Kelly.

Upward Bound/UBMS is gearing up for the summer and will soon post for summer RA's Spread the word!

Deborah Howell has been appointed to the JAQ Committee for this year and she is also a new union steward.

Penny Merritt is checking out The Ohio State University Women's rowing team schedule these days.  Mandy Merritt, daughter of Mark and Penny Merritt, is a scholar-athlete as a member of the women's rowing team at The Ohio State University.  After being red-shirted last year due to illness, she has just made a varsity boat and will be traveling to California this weekend for competition!  You can check out the website @ http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com and search for women's rowing team to see the entire schedule.  The roster for 2008-09 lists Mandy from Lucasville, Ohio and Valley High School.

Cindy Hopkins just received news that her daughter, Emily Hopkins, has been awarded a Morrill Excellence Scholarship from The Ohio State University.  This scholarship is equivalent to four years full tuition.  Emily follows her sister Kate to Ohio State who was awarded the same scholarship two years ago and who is also still attending Ohio State.

Join the USA Walk Group!!

Sarah Smith Richards is announcing the USA Walk group is once again ready to go!  Weather permitting, we will meet in front of the Clark Memorial Library at 12:00 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for a ½ hour walk around campus. The route is tentative, but we can improvise as we go!  So bring your water bottles and your tennis shoes and come for a healthful, invigorating walk with your fellow USA members!  See you there!  Contact Sarah for the dates and plan to meet with your fellow workers for an enjoyable brisk walk.

It's That Time of Year Again

Once again, the Women's Center is conducting a "Breast Cancer Awareness" event in conjunction with the SSU 5K Spring Bear Run/Walk.

Jenny Carver's first grandson was born on May 20, 2008, Logan Jacob Chadwick.  Her daughter Trish Chadwick is moving back here in March for 18 months while her husband does another tour in Iraq.  Jenny is looking forward to this as Trish is expecting her baby in June.  Jenny's son Barry finished his four year degree here at SSI in Graphic Design in June 2008 and got married on October 6th to his high school sweetheart, Kristin Schultz.

Donna Thompson has a new grandson, Jakab Garte Thompson.  He was born December 28, 2008 weighing 9 lb. 1 oz.  His big sister Rylee (5 yrs. old) is looking very proud in this picture, but the newness has worn off a little since she is having to share the attention now.  Jakab also has a big brother, Ethan, who will soon be 10.

Jonna Cook has a new granddaughter, Elaine (Lainey) Marie cook.  Lainey arrived on February 13, 2009 weighing 6 lbs 4 oz, and was 21 inches long.  The very proud parents are Justin and Holly Cook
