Notes from the Executive Board

USA Executive Board

Notes from your USA Executive Committee

 Penny Merritt

Spring is in the air…finally(!) and it is a very exciting time to be a part of Shawnee State University. Semester conversion is almost complete and we see several new faces around campus. Thanks for your support as we continue to move forward in governance at SSU.

You will not want to miss the refreshing yet informative events we have planned for the upcoming meetings.  April 10th, we will be briefed by Dave Todt regarding Shawnee 20-20.  Have no idea what Shawnee 20-20 is?  Don’t miss the April meeting!  PLUS, Gayle Massie is sharing “The ONE Secret to Staying Healthy.”  Be sure to read the newsletter sent out by SSU’s insurance committee. Gayle is part of SSU’s university-wide insurance committee that produced the newsletter, ‘Your Health and SSU.’  This newsletter is SSU’s first endeavor to contribute to the goals of Healthy People 2010.  The insurance committee has adopted the goal to assist members of SSU campus to become better-informed health consumers and thus receive better health care.

May’s meeting is essential for all USA members.  Bill Turner will demonstrate the AED (Automatic Electrical Defibrillator).  Since we currently have these life-saving devices in every building on campus, everyone should be familiar with how they work…thank you Cindy Hopkins for submitting this suggestion!

Currently in the planning stages for June is our ever-popular picnic!  As you can see, your new chair and executive committee have been busy planning interesting activities for all staff members. Please plan to attend and participate.  “The continued strong development of SSU can only be accomplished through constructive collaboration among all constituencies, particularly those internal to the University …” This means you!

Campus News

On a personal note congratulations goes out to Donna Thompson, Clark Memorial Library secretary, who has a new great-granddaughter.  Her granddaughter Jessica, who lives in Alabama, had a little girl on February 25th,   Emma Jean Deavers weighed in at 8 lbs. and 9 ozs and was 21 inches long! Donna promises to have pictures!

Jordin Lane, daughter of Djwana Colegrove, will graduate from Greenup Co. High School in May.  She will be attending Shawnee State University fall semester.

Marcia Tackett, wrote a grant to the Ohio Learning Network and the Teacher Education Department received $5000 to create a learning community for training and implementation of a new assessment and communication tool called TK20.  One of Marcia's new responsibilities this year is being administrator for the TK20 system which includes getting the system set up with the students and faculty information uploaded; training students, faculty and staff; being the liaison between the TK20 company and the Shawnee State University campus; and organizing the system so that it reflects the Teacher Education Department's needs for assessment data collection, student on-line portfolios, and faculty-staff-student communication.

ß Please Note   Cindy Haney's office has relocated to the Health Science Building.  Cindy is still processing applicant files but applicants to the health science programs should still submit their Health Science application and $25 fee to the Office of Admission, not to Cindy.  She has to re-route applications to the Admission Office if they have been sent to her office.

Congratulations

Two of our fellow employees have worked very hard and received their degrees Winter Quarter.  Congratulations go out to Penny Merritt: B.I.S. in Individualized Studies-Summa Cum Laude and Debra Schwamberger: Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences-Cum Laude.

The spotlight is on Heather Thacker, Secretary in the Math Department since October 2006.  Heather has previously worked part-time in Human Resources and Teacher Education.  She and her husband Colin have two daughters and a son - Hannah (6), Micah (4) and Cameron (1).  They live very close to the Scioto/Pike County border just north of Minford.  Hannah, who is an alumnus of Shawnee State University's  Children's Learning Center, attends Minford Elementary, and Micah currently attends the Children's Learning Center.  Heather enjoys gardening, scrap booking, and traveling with their friends and family to several custom truck shows throughout the year.
