Fall 2010

Around Campus

Notes from USA Chair                                     Fall 2010

UNIVERSITY STAFF ASSEMBLY

MISSION STATEMENT

The University Staff Assembly (USA) recognizes its shared responsibility for the performance of the University in carrying out its mission. We understand and support the need for commitment to the decision processes by which the University conducts its work and maintains its standards. To that end, the mission of the USA is to improve communication among our own constituency, and then among the University community, to actively participate in governance on the SSU campus, thereby strengthening the University and assisting in carrying out its commitment to education.

I want to start out with the mission of the University Staff Assembly.  While reading this, one sentence that stood out to me is ‘to improve communication among our own constituency, and then among the University community.’  Improving communication is one of the main objectives I want to work on while serving as USA chair.  As we go along in our own little “corner” of the University it’s very easy to lose track of what is going on across campus.  Sometimes we are lucky to know what is going on in the next building, downstairs or right down the hall! I want to work on improving communication in our group, as well as, across the University.  This cannot be done alone or with just a few people.  We need every member to actively participate. The members of the USA are the “nuts and bolts” of the university. Improving communication will help keep things running smoothly.  I’m asking that each member make every effort to attend our monthly meetings. If you are unable to attend, feel free to ask questions and make sure to read over the minutes that are sent out after the meetings.

The other sentence, ‘actively participate in governance on the SSU campus’ is especially important right now as University-wide Committees are being restructured.  Members of the USA executive board have met with Dr. Morris and the other constituency leaders.  We are currently working on making these committees more effective within the university while providing information to the university community.  As members of the USA, we want to ensure our continued participation in these committees.

I would also like to encourage every member to get involved in other University events.  The Women’s Center has a lot of exciting events planned for the 2010-11 year. Also, the SSU Relay for Life team, “Paws for the Cause”, is gearing up for next year’s event. This past year we were able to raise money for the American Cancer Society while having a great time! And last, but not least, the VRCFA has so many shows and events scheduled, there is bound to be more than one that sparks your interest!

Lastly I want to say how excited I am to be involved with a great group of people. The USA members have so much knowledge and experience and I hope to learn from each of you!  I hope to see you around campus and that you are having a wonderful Fall semester!
