Around Campus
Lori Perry
Enrollment
The number of new students—including
Ohio and Kentucky residents, traditional-age college students,
students from other states, and international students—boosted
Shawnee State University (SSU) this fall to its highest enrollment
mark ever, in addition to making SSU the institution with the second
highest percentage enrollment increase among the 13 state universities
in Ohio this academic year, behind only Central State University near
Dayton.
Dr. Morris said she attributes the enrollment increase to SSU faculty
and staff members working hard to ensure high-quality programming and
student support, in addition to the SSU Office of Admission staff for
its efforts in showcasing SSU to potential students and bringing them
to campus for opportunities to meet with faculty members and other
students, allowing them to “find that right match resulting in more
and more students coming to SSU.”
FYI
If you've made that New
Year's resolution to exercise and get into shape, why not stop by the
athletic center and check out the new equipment. Also, the pool
will be opening in the near future. Both facilities are FREE to
SSU employees.
There
will be a Red Cross blood drive on Wed., January 19th from 10-4 p.m.
For an appointment call Maralyce Newberry at 456-4720 or just stop by
the Rhodes Athletic Center that morning and register.
Be
sure to stop by the Appleton Gallery on the second floor of the VRCFA
from Jan. 10 - Feb. 10 to see "The Paintings of Robert Hutton and The
Ceramics of Anthony Wolking".
The
International Forum will be hosting an international food festival
February 8th in the bottom level of the University Center. Be sure to
stop by.
The
annual Career Fair sponsored by the Office of
Counseling and Career Services will be March 9th. The Career Fair is the
culmination of many months of work for Lisa Goodan, Secretary in
that department. Invitations and announcements are sent to employers
seeking to hire Shawnee graduates, followed by a collection of student
resumes and coordination of interview schedules for that day.
The Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science
programs are
looking for summer resident advisors to work from June 19 through July
30, 2005. Qualified applicants must be a junior or senior in college,
a college graduate or teacher, enjoy working with high school students
and able to make mature decisions and discipline as needed. Please
direct interested applicants to Becky Harr or Ryan McCall in the Trio
Center.
There have been several changes on
campus, including the following job changes. We wish everyone a
great year in their new postion.
Sherry Scott, Secretary III, EOC
Sarah Clausing, Secretary IV, OT/PT/RT/Sports Studies/Athletic
Training
Sandy Delabar, Secretary IV, Social Sciences
Elaine Bradley has moved to ATSS as the Assist. to the V.P. and
General Council
Mary Burchett is getting married and moved to Columbus. We wish Mary well.
Lora Warner, Account Clerk II, Bursar Office
Jenny Carver, Account Clerk II, Business Office
Vickie Grigson Waugh, Student Records Technician II, Registrar's
Office
Other changes around campus:
The Natatorium (pool and locker rooms)
are being rehabilitated.
The P.E. Connector is getting new flooring.
Health Sciences is in the design phase to be renovated.
EOC is now located in the Admissions area.
The President's office will extend into the old EOC area.
Parking lots around campus have been resurfaced.
The cafeteria has a new look. They are working on a call ahead menu
and currently have a menu on the web. Crispie Creme donuts are
available for breakfast in the cafeteria.
If you have other items of interest
that are happening around campus, be sure to let one of the newsletter
staff know. Thanks

Jeff Taylor, a long time employee of Shawnee
State University, recently passed away! This issue of the USA
Newsletter is spotlighting Jeff and the following are a few comments
from some folks here on campus that worked with and considered
themselves friends of Jeff.
Betty F. Forbes – Human Resources Secretary
“Jeff was one of my dearest friends and
colleagues. We worked together processing checks for payroll and
accounts payable before the CARS system came to campus. The job of
processing the checks on the old antiquated equipment was difficult
but Jeff and I always enjoyed each other’s company and managed to
laugh at the problems. We became very close. I visited with Jeff
after his release from the hospital. He was still making everyone
smile in his typical Jeff Taylor manner. We shared many special
moments in his last days. Jeff loved SSU and the people he worked
with here. I will always miss my friend Jeff.”
Jenny Carver- Accounts Payable Clerk
“Jeff was a good friend to me……………The
one thing that stands out in my mind is the fact that he was so
devoted to his children. They were his life. He was a one of a kind
father. His daughter Tiffany lost her best friend when her daddy died. When Lora Warner
and I worked in the AP office and Jeff was in Purchasing we had so
much fun. He loved playing pranks on us. I don’t remember any
particular prank. I just know I sure do miss him. “
Cindy Hopkins – Department Industrial and
Engineering Technologies, Secretary
“IET is frequently in contact with
Purchasing regarding tracking down orders placed and if the orders have
been received, so Jeff and I became friends working together in this
capacity. Jeff would frequently call me to see if we had received an
order or I would call him to see if he could track a missing order.
Jeff was always joking and extremely pleasant to deal with. I can
still hear his laugh, which was infectious. During his illness when
he was off work, every so often I would send a funny card to keep his
spirits up. A few weeks before Jeff’s passing, he came over to see
me, thanking me for the cards as they gave him a laugh. He told me
that he was looking forward to coming back and laughing with me again
as we worked to find orders. Jeff taught me how much good one simple
gesture can do to lift someone’s spirits, so when you see the emails
come about one of our own facing a tough spot in life, think of Jeff,
and please send a card.”
Just as the other employees stated, Jeff was a
wonderful father and a good friend. I’m sure he has everyone
smiling and laughing in heaven.
