Summer Game Design Camps

Shawnee State University will be offering three Game Design Camps this summer for students ages 15 and older.

Shawnee State's game design programs are nationally ranked by Princeton Review. Your child will receive instruction by experts in the field and will gain hands-on experience. 

The cost for each camp is $285 per student and includes lunch. Campers must be at least 15 years of age and should have basic computer knowledge such as navigating files and folders in Windows 7/10 environment, using internet browser and be able to type.

Camp 1: Game Creation Using an Engine

June 12-16, 2017
9 am to 3 pm
(Monday through Friday)

The camp is taught by Jason Witherell, SSU’s Associate Professor of Digital Simulation and Gaming Technology Engineering. The camp will explore game creation at a high-level using an existing 2D game engine. Students will learn hands-on tutorials to create simple and functional games and be exposed to some programming. The last portion of the camp will focus on collaborating with other students and camp leaders to produce a game to show off to friends and families in the closing ceremonies.

Camp 2: Game Art + Design

June 19-22, 2017
9 am to 4 pm
(Monday through Thursday)

Greg Lyons, SSU’s Professor of Game and Simulation Development Arts, will be teaching this camp and will cover the creation of 3D art assets as used in contemporary 3D games and designing levels for play. Students will be taught how to create and texture 3D meshes and import them into an engine. They will also learn to create interactivity for their games with each level being functional and possessing game elements integrated to provide play and immersion. Students will be taught using Autodesk Maya, the Unreal Engine 4 and various texturing processes.

Camp 3: Game Programming

July 10-14, 2017
9 am to 3 pm
(Monday through Friday)

This camp will be taught by Jason Witherell and focus on “pure” programming using C# programming and the MonoGame framework (used in games such as Axiom Verge, Bastion and Stardew Valley). Students will be focused on programming in a gaming setting and cover topics such as statements, repetition, functions, object-oriented programming, arrays and more.
