UWC-Student Services Assessment Committee Minutes
September 22, 2008
Members present:
Krista Maxson, Jim Settle, Michelle Patrick, Bob Trusz, Jonica Burke,
Barb Bradbury, Randy Warman
A copy of the
structure of the University Wide Assessment Committee was distributed
and during the review it was pointed out that some of the people
mentioned were retired or had moved to different offices. Krista
explained that two of the committees were still being put together and
gave a brief history of the assessment committee.
Jonica reported that the workshop scheduled for Oct. 23rd had been
changed to a webinar to be scheduled on Oct. 23rd or 24th. There are
20(?) audits that need to be done and Jonica is going to assign each of
us 5 audits to do online before Oct. 16th. There will be a meeting in
Columbus in December, possible on the 2nd.
Jim passed out 4 copies of the NSSE report and pointed out some outliers
such as a low score for students taking foreign language or completing
an internship or field experience. He reported that the NSSE is a
survey that is required for the VSA and that Xuemei (director of
institutional research) will write up the report of the data from NSSE
that is required for the VSA.
Krista asked if anyone brought summaries or examples of the assessments
being done in their office, pointing out that she had received an email
from Barb with her response but had not had a chance to review.
Michelle reported on the survey the Student Success Center distributed
in the Univ 101 course during 06/07. Krista asked everyone to send her
an email briefly describing any assessment efforts that have been or are
being done in their office to her so she can report to the executive
committee next week. Bob asked if he should report on assessment
efforts being planned and the answer was yes.
There was a discussion about making a report to share with different
constituencies and Jim ended up volunteering to put together a list of
the top and bottom ten things reported by NSSE.
Jim reported that he would recommend that NSSE be done every other or
every third year. He would like us to look at giving the CIRP, an
entering freshman survey administered during orientation and the CORE,
an alcohol and drug survey administered in the spring.

Trusz, Jonica Burke, Barb Bradbury, Randy Warman, Mary Cummings
Jim Settle led a discussion about the National Survey of Student
Engagement (NSSE). The survey was conducted in the spring and we had a
good comparable return rate. He mentioned some highlights and promised
to bring copies for us to view at the next meeting.
There was a discussion about what assessment efforts are being made in
the different offices and a suggestion was made to bring examples or
summaries of what they are to the next meeting or they could be emailed
to Jim Settle or Krista Maxson.
Jonica Burke informed us about an assessment audit that would look at
our online offerings. There is going to be a workshop in Columbus on
October 23rd. The committee agreed to take part.
Krista asked about future meeting times and Jim responded that Peggy
would take care of arranging future meetings.
