Minors offer students enrolled in any of SSU's baccalaureate programs an opportunity to broaden their course of study with an auxiliary focus. The department of Social Sciences invites students at SSU to consider a minor in any of the many offered by the department. All minors require a minimum of 24 credit hours and a minimum grade of "C" in any of the courses taken. Courses taken on a pass/no-credit basis may not apply toward the minor. All minors are subject to all applicable baccalaureate degree and curricula rules and restrictions issued by the academic departments and the General Education Program. Please consult your advisor or contact the chair of the Department or consult the following sections for additional information. A minor in economics offers students enrolled in any of Shawnee State University’s baccalaureate programs an opportunity to broaden their course of study with an auxiliary focus in economics. This is especially appealing to students interested in careers in banking, law, finance, or government service. The minor requires you to complete 15 semester hours of economics, with a minimum grade of C. No more than 9 of these hours may count toward your major(s), and since ECON 2201 and 2202 are prerequisites for all upper-level economics courses, these are required for the minor. Any three additional upper-level economics courses will satisfy the hours requirement. This may be an appropriate minor if you are interested in a career in marketing, tourism, environment, city planning, teaching, or the military. The minor in geography requires the completion of 18 hours in geography with a minimum grade of C. Courses taken on a pass/no-credit basis may not be applied to the minor. No more than 9 of these hours may count toward your major(s). The minor requires you to complete 15 hours in political science with a minimum grade of C in each of the courses. You are subject to all applicable baccalaureate degree and curricula rules and restrictions issued by the academic departments and the General Education Program. No more than 9 of these hours may count toward your major. Select 15 hours from the following courses. Sociology provides an excellent background for the development of careers in law, journalism, social services, recreation, counseling, and business. Students must complete 18 hours of sociology courses. No more than 9 of these hours may count toward your majors. A minimum grade of C is required for all courses in the minor. Courses taken on a pass/no –credit basis are not applicable. Any variation from described program requires advisor and chair approval. Students are encouraged to take MATH 1500: Principles of Statistics. Future employment opportunities can be found in business, industry, health care, social services, public relations, and criminal justice. A “C” or better must be earned for each course within the minor. Courses taken on a pass/no-credit basis do not count towards the minor. Any variation from the program must have the chairperson’s approval. Students are encouraged to take Math 1500: Principles of Statistics to fulfill their quantitative GEP requirement. You may not count more than 9 credit hours of psychology taken in your major toward the minor in psychology.
