The minimum requirements for admission into the dental hygiene program include High School or College Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, (C or above), and an ACT score of 18 in the science reasoning section. Admission into the dental hygiene program is selective and competitive.

The deadline for receipt of all application materials for admission is March 1.

Students who have completed application materials may be considered for acceptance on the basis of space available in the program and the academic qualifications.

In order to remain in good academic standing in the Dental Hygiene Program, you must:

  1. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all coursework needed to meet the requirements for an associate of applied science degree in dental hygiene. This applies to all required courses taken before as well as after admission into the dental hygiene program.
  2. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all dental hygiene courses.
  3. Not receive a failing grade in any of the required courses for the dental hygiene program.

Students who fail to achieve any one of the three requirements for good academic standing will be dismissed from the dental hygiene program with the option of reapplying for admission the following academic year. The decision to readmit a student will be made by the dental hygiene faculty after reviewing the student’s progress in completing any conditions for readmittance as stated in the letter of dismissal and an interview with the student. Students who are academically dismissed from the dental hygiene program for a second time are not eligible for readmittance.

Students may appeal a dismissal from the dental hygiene program by following the guidelines for appeal as detailed in this catalog.

Please Note

  • After the first term, all subsequent basic and technical courses are closely related and, therefore, must be taken in sequential order.
  • Only those students who have been officially accepted into the program or who have received the approval of the department’s chairperson may take the courses beginning with the DTHY prefix.

Program Requirements

Prior to enrollment in clinical dental hygiene courses, students will be required to have a recent physical examination and current immunizations to include Hepatitis B along with a TB skin test. Upon acceptance into the program, students will receive additional information concerning all requirements.
