Honors Course Catalog Listings

The following is a list of all of the courses at Shawnee State University that are ever offered as Honors.  Keep in mind that not all classes are offered each semester; typically there are 2-3 Honors sections offered during each fall and spring semester.  No Honors courses are offered during summer semester.  Always make sure to check    Honors Courses or Online Catalog to see which Honors classes are being offered for each quarter.  Also, keep in mind that in order to graduate with an Honors diploma, you MUST complete IDST4900S. 

ARTH 1101H Intro to Art History (Honors)  (3) The course is an introduction to the visual arts. It encompasses the world of western and non-western art. It deals with the principles of art, formal and contextual elements and the basic vocabulary necessary in order to articulate opinions about the arts. The course has a studio component that will allow the student hands on experience to encourage visual communication through the visual arts; $FA

ENGL 1102H Discourse and Composition (Honors) (3) An enhanced introduction to college composition. Students are required to actively participate in class discussions of original readings relevant to the goals of the course. Preq. placement

ENGL 1105H Composition and Argumentation (Honors) (3) An enhanced introduction to argumentation and composition. Students are required to actively participate in class discussion of original readings relevant to the goals of the course. Preq. ENGL 1101 or ENGL 1102

IDST 2225H Civilization and Literature I (Honors)(3) An enhanced exploration of important cultural themes in western culture through reading and discussion of major texts in Western Culture. Preq. ENGL 1105 or ENGL 1105H

IDST 2226H Civilization and Literature II (Honors)(3) An enhanced exploration of important cultural themes in American Culture through discussion and reading of important American texts. Preq. ENGL 1105 or ENGL 1105H

IDST 2227H Civilization and Literature III (Honors)(3) An enhanced exploration of important non-Western cultural themes through discussion and reading of important non-Western texts. Preq ENGL 1105 or 1105H

IDST 4490H Honors Senior Seminar (3) Students engage in extended class discussion of relevant readings for the chosen theme for that semester’s Honors Senior Seminar in addition to meeting the normal requirements of Senior Seminar. Such themes might include (e.g.) the conflict between science and cultural values, different ways of making and validating knowledge claims or more extensive discussion of what it means to engage in critical thinking. Preq Completion of 8 GEP courses

NTSC 1110H Scientific Reasoning and Methodology Natural Sciences (Honors) (3) Uses scientific reasoning to explore a specific theme or controversy in the natural sciences. For example, discussion of the controversies surrounding classification of dinosaurs.

PHIL 2200H Introduction to Philosophy (Honors)(3) Addresses the question of what constitutes valid knowledge by examining original texts with an emphasis on student discussion and participation. Preq ENGL 1105 or 1105H

PHIL 2230H Social and Political Philosophy (Honors)(3)This course is designed to enable Honors students to explore the perennial questions of social and political thought through the most significant thinkers, both traditional and contemporary, of Western civilization. 

PHIL 2284H East Asian Philosophy (Honors)(3) Explores topics in East Asian Philosophy through the examination and discussion of original texts: Emphasis on student discussion and participation. Preq ENGL 1105 or 1105H

SOSC 1110SH Foundations of Social Sciences (Honors) (3) Explores a specific interdisciplinary theme in the social sciences. Examples include an examination of the causes of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. or of Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs and Steel.
