SECURITY DEPARTMENT - CRIME ALERT SECURITY DEPARTMENT - CRIME ALERT
There has been a recent incident at a local downtown bar in which
several Shawnee State University students were assaulted. This incident,
although not directed at the students because of their status as SSU
students, shows the need of each of us to stay alert and tuned in to our
surroundings. In an effort to reduce these types of incidents
please follow these crime prevention tips:
1) Trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe in any situation, go with
your gut. 2) If you are involved in a heated argument that
appears to be turning violent, walk away. Staying to fight — “to prove
something” — only demonstrates poor judgment in almost every instance. 3) Never carry a firearm, knife or other illegal
weapon. A weapon will definitely escalate the situation, and it could
ultimately be used to harm innocent people or yourself. 4) Avoid excessive drinking, or if you have been
drinking, recognize its impact on your judgment. Alcohol is a
contributing factor in many assaults. 5) If you see an assault in progress—dial 9-1-1
immediately to alert the police. DO NOT jump into the fray—unless it is
a last resort to prevent more serious injury.
Several incidents of items being stolen have taken
place in the Rhodes Athletic Center recently. These incidents have taken
place at different times of the day and evening. In most instances, the
valuable items were inside an unsecured locker.
And, some incidents the valuables were left in plain sight with
no one around, and easily seen by the thieves. In an effort to reduce these types of incidents
please follow these crime prevention tips: 1) Do not leave valuables inside an unsecure
locker or unattended in plain sight to include in a classroom, vehicle
or in a residence hall. Avoid being an easy target. 2) When leaving for the weekend or for a semester
break do not load valuables in the vehicle days before leaving campus.
Secure valuables in the trunk, in the residence hall or at home. 3) Take advantage of the SSU Operation Identification
program and borrow an engraver from the SSU Department of Public Safety
to mark your valuables. 4) Be
aware of your surroundings. Notify SSU Department of Public Safety at
3232 or 3243 if you see suspicious activity on campus.
