SCHOLAR
ATHLETES NAMED
News The renovation process will be completed in numerous phases. Phase I completion will give the gymnasium a fresh new look. The most impressive aspect of Phase I is the brand new, state of the art, gymnasium floor. “The new floor will be beneficial in many ways. The floor is softer and more shock-absorbent, which is better and safer for our athletes.” said Athletic Trainer Ryan Boggs. In addition to the new floor the gymnasium itself has undergone a face lift. New paint throughout the gym has given the “Cave” a much cleaner, crisper look that all fans will be able to enjoy during Shawnee State home contests. “I’m very excited about the new look of the gym,” said Head Women’s Basketball Coach Robin Hagen-Smith. “Our players and staff cannot wait to step onto the court for the first time. We are eager to showcase the facility to our fans. It is absolutely beautiful and we are extremely proud of it.” [For complete story and pictures click here]
Baseball “Again, we have a very challenging schedule ahead of us. Hopefully, our early non-conference slate will only better prepare us for the vigor’s of our American Mideast Conference schedule,” says Head Baseball Coach Ted Tom. “Having an opportunity to play several of the best teams that the NAIA has to offer as well as Division III powerhouse, Marietta College, will allow our players the opportunity to compete at the highest level possible.” The Bears travel to Tennessee Wesleyan the weekend of February 21-22 to begin play. They, then, have a 12 game home stand that brings Indiana Tech and Concordia (MI) to town for respective three game sets before they embark on the conference schedule with a four game set against Walsh. Mount Vernon ends the home stand with a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17. The team will take a break from conference action for spring break. This year’s trip includes a three game set versus Division II Urbana, followed by games against Southern Wesleyan (SC), Southern Polytechnic State University (GA), Shorter College (GA), and finishing the trip with Trevecca Nazarene University (TN). Conference play will resume upon the team’s return to Portsmouth, OH with trips to Point Park, Notre Dame College, Rio Grande, Mount Vernon, and Malone University. The Bears will entertain Rio Grande, Ohio Dominican, and Cedarville. The Bears will also travel to UC-Clermont and Marietta College for non-conference action.
