Teacher Education

The Department of Teacher Education is an NCATE accredited teacher preparation department that prepares students to become learner-centered, inquiring professionals for the classrooms of the 21st century. The teacher preparation program requires a strong foundation in an academic content or teaching area with that of a professional development program, which prepares entry level teachers for the dynamic responsibilities of contemporary schools.

SSU students win poster awards at Celebration of Scholarship

Students at Shawnee State University submitted posters and won several awards during the Celebration of Scholarship in April.

Three judges used a rubric that listed five categories and five possible scores from one to five. The categories were poster content, level of scholarship, visually aesthetic, grammar and how the student answered relevant questions about his/her project.

Kenneth Livingston, Ashley Sanders and Julia Steinhauer, early childhood majors, won the SSU Faculty Award for "Wired Up, Wound Down: Music as an Educational Tool." The poster was about the value of music throughout the day to enhance brain development, strengthen learning and manage learning environments.

Amber Arnold and Lindsey Peacock, early childhood majors, won the Gary Gemmer Award for "Inside Out, Outside In." The poster was about moving learning beyond the four walls of a classroom.

Nursing students Keri Kuhn, R.N., Helen Scherer, R.N., Hayley Castle, R.N., and Lori Castle, R.N., won the Gary Gemmer Outstanding Poster Presentation Award for "Teen Pregnancy and STD Prevention."

Tina Veach, R.N., Tina Lang, R.N., Taryn Scott, R.N., and Erika Isaacs, R.N., won the Clark Memorial Library Excellence in Research Award for "Preventing Patient Falls: An Evidence-Based Practice Approach."

The Department of Teacher Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
